For me it was the fun we had going to a show, hangin' for a while in the lot and then dancin' and grooving to the best live rock&roll jam band on the planet. Somehow I slowly dropped out of the scene and shows somewhere in late 80s can't pinpoint exactly why but that super hot Jerry coma show at RFK was the beginning of the end for me - saw some shows after that but none of them were "That show smoked" type of shows - sure there were moments within the final few I went to but it was not enough for me to seek out and see. Commuting to NYC in '90s I remember seeing that the boys were in town (MSG) but never got tix and joined in the merriment.

Now, however, having rediscovered the GD after about a 17 year hiatus (I, quite literally, did not listen to any GD in 17 years - was listing to mostly blues (J Winter) & bluegrass) I heard Bertha (A favorite) on the FM at work and decided 'damn that's a great tune', picked up Skull & Roses on the way home from work, discovered the Archive shortly thereafter and it has been a Giant 'midlife crises' slide into GD oblivian. . .

Hope this helps

After so many shows and so many years of listening, they are still special to me because any time I listen it is like i am getting together with old friends. There are just so many memories of fun and weirdness associated with this band that it is mind boggling. Going to shows, hanging with friends, waiting with anticipation for the next shows to come around...all of it. As for going to the shows, I have never before and never will again experince that kind of fun, weirdness, spontnaeity, wackiness or what ever you want to call it.(hard to define it, isn't it?)
Simply put_ _ _ THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A GRATEFUL DEAD CONCERT!! Never was before and never will be again!!
